Botox for Mood
In recent years, evidence is emerging that Botox may be effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Yes, you read that correctly. How can this be? Emotions such as sadness, fear, and anger are all associated with depression or anxiety. These emotions are very tightly correlated with activation of a particular facial muscles. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing these muscles, thereby preventing these facial expressions. This may cue the nervous system that it is not feeling those emotions, thereby short-circuiting the depressive or anxious pattern.
Current evidence estimates a roughly 50% chance that Botox can lead to significant improvement in the treatment of depression. There is some evidence that Botox can lessen anxiety symptoms as well. In all the studies, any response was achieved by week six after receiving Botox. For those who benefitted, their response continued for 12-16 weeks. This means that if Botox is effective for you, you may have to continue treatments no more often than every 12 weeks.
This off-label use of Botox is not for cosmetic purposes, although you may still enjoy a cosmetic benefit.
